Candidate filing closed on Friday for this fall’s municipal elections in Lexington County, setting the slate for a dozen towns and cities to choose who will represent them in the years ahead.

Voters in 12 municipalities will choose council members on Nov. 4. Seven will also elect a mayor at the same time, including two open elections that guarantee a new mayor will be chosen.

Four candidates are vying to replace Lancer Shull as the mayor of Batesburg-Leesville, including two current members of the town council, David Bouknight and Stephen Cain.

The town on the county line between Lexington and Saluda will have the largest ballot this fall, with four contested town council races as well as a mayor’s race. Cain is hedging his bets by running for re-election to his District 2 seat as well as the mayor’s office, while Larry McConnaughhay is trying for mayor and the District 1 council seat currently held by Barbara Brown.

In Cayce, one council seat is open and another incumbent will face opposition after the city lost two city managers, two police chiefs and a finance director in the past year.

In Swansea, two town council members, Doris Simmons and Jerome Williams, are running to replace Viola McDaniel as mayor. Either new mayor would be tasked with addressing the small town’s struggles with funding in recent years.
