Batesburg-Leesville mayor’s race looks to be headed to a runoff

Voters in Batesburg-Leesville were choosing Tuesday between four candidates for mayor to succeed outgoing Mayor Lancer Shull. But they may have a couple more weeks to decide.

Two town councilmen, David Bouknight and Steve Cain, were running for mayor against Larry McConnaughhay and Greg Moseley.

Bouknight led in the results Tuesday, but finished the count with 42% of the vote, preliminary results show. That means he would be in a runoff in two weeks against Cain, who finished with 29%.

Moseley had 18% of the vote, while McConnaughhay had 10%.

Cain was also running for re-election to his District 3 against Tyler List, which Cain carried with two-thirds of the vote.

In other town council races, Bo Turner lead Troy Teague with 75% to 19% in District 1, with 6% going to write-in votes. Cathe Knox had 52% of the vote to 46% for Sheba Williams in District 5, and while Joe Montgomery had 72% of the vote against Natalie Gary in District 7.

The town of 5,000 on the western edge of Lexington County near the Saluda County line is on the front line of growth as new development moves further west from Lexington.
