‘Who investigates the investigators?’ SC Congressman supports Rosenstein impeachment
With the Russia investigation lurking and new revelations coming out every day, a group of Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives banned together to try and impeach the Deputy Attorney General.
Rep. Jeff Duncan, R-South Carolina, was one of 11 congressmen who filed articles of impeachment against Rob Rosenstein, according to a post on his Facebook page.
“This is an issue I take very seriously, and a decision I didn’t enter into lightly,” Duncan posted Thursday.
Duncan said he supported impeaching the second most ranking member of the Department of Justice because of the “unprecedented level of obstruction that the DoJ has shown towards Congress,” during the Russia investigation.
The articles specifically charge Rosenstein of “high crimes and misdemeanors” for what they claimed was his inability to cooperate with the House’s own investigations into Russian collusion and Hillary Clinton’s emails.
“Who investigates the investigators?” Duncan said on Facebook. “The answer is supposed to be Congress, but when that process is impeded, action must be taken. “
Despite accusations, the Department of Justice has provided lawmakers with more than 800,000 documents they have requested, according to the Associated Press.
House Speaker Paul Ryan said he did not support impeaching Rosenstein, saying he’s satisfied with the Department of Justice’s cooperation.
Though Rosenstein is not the head of the Justice Department, he has been taking point on Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself in 2017. Rosenstein has the ability to fire Mueller if he so wishes, though he has not expressed any inclination towards stopping the investigation, which has produced multiple indictments.
The resolution was not brought up during Thursday’s session, and therefore was pushed back until after the House’s month-long recess.
