Surgeon general to address MUSC graduates

Surgeon General Vivek Murthy will speak next month at commencement exercises at the Medical University of South Carolina.

The university said Monday that Murthy, who was confirmed by the U.S. Senate last year as the nation’s 19th surgeon general, will address about 600 graduates at MUSC in Charleston on May 15.

The surgeon general is considered America’s doctor and is as a spokesman to provide information on ways to improve the health of U.S. citizens. He also oversees the operations of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, which has 6,700 uniformed public health officers.

Governor’s schedule, activities

Gov. Nikki Haley’s publicly announced schedule for the rest of this week, released Monday by her staff, is:

Tuesday, 9:30 a.m.: Budget and Control Board meeting, State House grounds

Tuesday, 12:45 p.m.: Press conference, Colonial Life Arena, Columbia

Friday, 6:30 p.m.: Speak at the 48th annual Silver Elephant celebration, Columbia

Saturday, 10 a.m.: Attend the S.C. Republican State Convention, Columbia

According to her staff, Haley activities last week included:

6 each: Legislative meetings; also, ceremonial duties, proclaiming May as Teacher Appreciation Month, speaking with Junior League of Columbia members, attending a Cabinet employee appreciation lunch., participating in the 2015 Tourism Student Awards ceremony, meeting with PalmettoPride’s annual “Litter Trashes Everyone” elementary art contest winners, and attending the Palmetto Health Foundation’s 2015 McDaniels Golf Classic auction

5: Calls or meetings concerning state agencies

4: Economic-development activities, including a meeting at Boeing and an Orangeburg Chamber of Commerce meeting

2: Political activities, addressing the East Cooper Republican Club in Mount Pleasant and the Senate GOP Caucus

1 each: Call to an unidentified fellow governor; also, a budget meeting; also, a visit to a school, Lugoff-Elgin Middle School

Busiest day: Tuesday, with nine activities

Slowest day: Friday, with one activity
