MORNING BUZZ: House to debate body cameras, abortion debate could become a roadblock
House members to debate body cameras, senators to discuss officer-involved shootings
The S.C. House will debate its bill that would require statewide use of body cameras by law enforcement officers. At 9 a.m. in Gressette Room 207 a panel of senators will debate three bills that relate to police officers and officer-involved shootings. One bill would give the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division exclusive jurisdiction in the investigating all officer-involved shootings that result, or could have resulted, in bodily injury or death. Another bill would make it so that if a person photographs or records a police officer making an arrest or acting in an official capacity in a public place, it would not be considered hindering a law enforcement officer. (Agenda) The S.C. Senate passed a bill Wednesday that would require all police officers in the state to wear body cameras.
Abortion bill could sink roads deal
Senate Republicans hope to pass a bill banning abortion at 20 weeks of pregnancy before lawmakers break for their summer recess – adding South Carolina to a growing list of states moving to pass abortion restrictions.
But Democratic opponents say the proposal could have another consequence, dooming a long list of other state priorities – including fixing the state’s crumbling roads and bridges – as the legislative session barrels toward its June 4 deadline for passing bills.
