SC politics: Coastal residents surveyed about hurricane evacuations
Local, state and federal governments are conducting a survey of coastal residents in South Carolina to determine who might need assistance if there were a large-scale evacuation before a hurricane.
The telephone survey, which began Monday, is to determine the needs of people who might need special assistance in a storm, including those who are ill or disabled, have no transportation or have needs that require electricity.
The idea is to find out where such people may be in relation to evacuation routes and the kind of assistance they may require. The survey is being taken in nine counties on and near the coast.
It’s being conducted in a partnership among local emergency managers, the S.C. Emergency Management Division and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
