In Indiana, it’s do or die for Cruz, #NeverTrump
Tuesday in Indiana is do-or-die time for the GOP’s #NeverTrump movement and its would-be leader, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.
And, according to polls, it is not looking good for the anti-Trump forces.
Meanwhile, former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will move another step toward the Democratic nomination.
Trump leads by about 10 percentage points over Cruz in Indiana, according to an average of polls by Real Clear Politics. Ominously, for the anti-Trump forces, that lead has been increasing — the most recent poll had the New York billionaire up by 17 percentage points.
Clinton’s lead is narrower over U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont — ranging from as much as 13 percentage points to, more recently, as little as 4 points.
However, since Democrats divide delegates proportionately, Clinton is assured of getting a good hunk of Indiana’s 83 delegates — regardless of the outcome.
On the Republican side, Trump could carry all of Indiana’s 57 delegates, adding to his lead. The statewide winner gets 30 delegates. The other 27 are awarded — three each — to the winner of the state’s nine congressional districts.
Up next: Republicans and Democrats vote in West Virginia on May 10. Republicans also vote the same day in Nebraska.
