‘Never Trump’ supporters try to block SC delegates, fail
The Elephant in the Room: Richland County GOP delegate Tyson Grinstead shares an inside look at the Republican National Convention. Grinstead, 30, is a senior manager of public policy at Sunrun, a solar energy company.
Day 1 of the RNC Convention was a blast! From Mrs. Trump to excitement on the Republican Party’s rules, there was no shortage of action for delegates on the ground to experience.
Delegates started our day started off by having breakfast with our very own congressman – Rep. Joe Wilson. Wilson discussed national security and was followed by rising Republican star- Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas.
Right after lunch, our 50 delegates, our alternates and guests from South Carolina made our way to the convention hall. While security lines were long, officers in Cleveland are doing a great job keeping delegates safe. The security lines were not as long as the Sunday night welcome event where officers had to deal with protests.
As many folks back home have heard, there was a battle started by “Never Trump” delegates, many from Virginia and Utah, to have the rules be voted on by roll call. The hope was to use this a building block to slow down the nomination of Donald Trump. The effort failed and was opposed by the majority of South Carolina delegates.
The speakers at the RNC convention were amazing and the crowd was loud and supportive. From Rudy Giuliani to Willie Robertson to Rick Perry to Melania Trump the excitement was undeniable. There were minor protest during Giuliani’s and Jeff Session’s speech by Code Pink protesters, but the protesters only served to bring the delegates together.
We are all anxious to see what Day 2 has in store!
