Some SC residents might have recently bought E. coli-contaminated beef. What to know
Some South Carolina residents might have beef contaminated with E. coli in their freezers, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Inspections Service says.
In a Monday announcement, the inspection service states that approximately 120,872 pounds of raw ground beef product had been recalled by Lakeside Refrigerated Services, a Swedesboro, NJ company. The beef might have been contaminated with E. coli, a bacteria that can cause diarrhea, severe stomach cramps, vomiting and other symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The beef was carried by several brands, including Thomas Farms and Marketside Butcher, both of which have shipped some of the product in question to South Carolina.
The possibly contaminated beef products were manufactured from Feb. 1 through April 8 and then distributed throughout the U.S.
The potentially contaminated products have labels that carry the establishment number “EST. 46841” inside the USDA mark of inspection, the announcement states.
Most of what’s been recalled is past its use by/sell by date, meaning the main concern is that some consumers have it in their freezers.
“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them,” the announcement reads. “These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”
