Lawyer: Lexington County father won’t talk more about death of 5 children without attorneys present

Timothy Jones of Red Bank has told investigators he won’t talk with them about the deaths of his five children without his lawyers present.

That decision came in a notice filed Wednesday in Lexington County Circuit Court by his lawyers.

Jones invoked legal protection against self-incrimination as well as refusing to be questioned further without a legal adviser present.

The notice came from Boyd Young of the S.C. Commission on Indigent Defense and 11th Circuit Public Defender Robert Madsen.

Young has expertise in capital murder cases and investigations that cross state lines.

It also applies in Mississippi, where Jones was detained by authorities last weekend after a vehicle check.

Lexington County officials say Jones will be charged shortly with killing the children, ages 1-8, one of the largest mass slayings in recent Midlands history.

The bodies of the three boys and two girls were found in plastic garbage bags Tuesday outside Camden, Ala., investigators say.

Sheriff Lewis McCarty has said Jones – a divorced father who had custody of the youngsters – has not explained what happened.
