Developments: Memorial held for 9th Charleston victim

Memorial service held for last Charleston church shooting victim

The Rev. Daniel Simmons Sr., a minister from Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, was remembered Tuesday at a memorial service at Greater St. Luke AME Church in Charleston.

Simmons’ funeral will be held Thursday at Bethel AME Church in Columbia. He will be buried at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.

Simmons is the last of the nine victims of the June 17 shootings at the predominantly black Emanuel AME to be buried. The nine were shot at a Bible study that Simmons regularly attended.

A white man, Dylann Storm Roof of Richland County, faces nine counts of murder in the slayings. The Justice Department also is considering whether to file hate-crime charges.
