Bicyclist launched into oncoming traffic after truck hits him from behind, NC cops say

A bicyclist was thrown into traffic and killed in North Carolina on Thanksgiving, officials say.

Matthew Franklin Reddin, 30, was riding his bike east on U.S. 64 in Iredell County near Statesville just before 9 p.m. Thursday when he was hit from behind by a pickup truck, according to a release from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

He wasn’t wearing a helmet and had on dark clothes, the release says.

Reddin was thrown from his bike and into the opposite lane of traffic, where he was hit by a GMC sport utility vehicle, Highway Patrol says.

He died at the scene, according to Highway Patrol.

The driver of the GMC, 39-year-old Richelle Brogan, “immediately stopped,” but the pickup driver continued traveling east, troopers say.

No one in the GMC was hurt, according to Highway Patrol.

Troopers say they are still searching for the truck, a “1994-2002 Dodge Ram lifted pickup truck with a loud exhaust” with possible damage to the driver’s side grill or headlight.

“Anyone with information is asked to immediately contact the NCSHP Troop F Communications Center at 828-466-5500 or dial 911,” the release says.
