5-year-old shot in head while in a car with her mother, North Carolina cops say

A 5-year-old was in a car with her mom when she was shot in the head, North Carolina officials say.

The girl was rushed to a hospital after gunfire erupted in New Bern on Tuesday night, the Craven County Sheriff’s Office told WNCT and other news outlets.

Deputies say the child had a “life-threatening head wound” after the shooting in a residential neighborhood, WITN reports.

It happened in a mobile home park roughly 115 miles east of Raleigh, according to the station.

The shooting was the second reported at the same location in the past two weeks, WNCT reports.

Jaqueline Hill, the girl’s aunt, lives nearby and said she was waiting for her grandson when shots were fired Tuesday, she told WCTI.

“All of the sudden I heard a lot of bullets going on,” she told the station.

Deputies say the shooting may be gang-related and are working with the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, according to WITN.

Craven County authorities have “persons of interest” in connection with the shooting, media outlets report.

New Bern is on the Neuse and Trent rivers, near the coast of Eastern North Carolina.

The first name of the girl’s aunt is also spelled Jacqueline in a news report.
