School roof blows off as severe storms move through Eastern North Carolina

Part of a school roof blew away as storms moved through Eastern North Carolina on Monday afternoon, officials say.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were in effect until 3:15 p.m. near Goldsboro as the National Weather Service expected hail and strong winds to hit the area.

It was about 2 p.m. when part of the gym’s roof blew off at Union Intermediate School, sending three children to a hospital for evaluation, Wendy Cabral, spokesperson for Sampson County Schools, told McClatchy News.

Forecasters say severe weather chances linger until 6 a.m. Tuesday in a swath of North Carolina that includes Greenville and Wilmington.

But the system “should quickly progress east with time, limiting the severe threat greatly by the early evening hours,” according to the National Weather service.

Over the next two days, some parts of North Carolina could see up to 1 inch of rain, reports ABC11, The News & Observer’s media partner. Forecasters say rain chances stick around the area through at least Wednesday.
