Wife checked husband’s lottery ticket — and her ‘eyes bugged out’ at the huge NC prize
Carl Fagervik Jr. has a routine when he plays the lottery: He “always” uses his wedding anniversary, his birthday or his wife’s birthday when choosing his numbers.
So when he bought a $2 Lucky for Life ticket on Dec. 28, he picked his five numbers using that strategy, he told North Carolina lottery officials, according to a Jan. 6 news release.
The 67-year-old from Winston-Salem said his wife checked his numbers for him, and that’s when he knew something was different than previous tickets.
“She looked at me with her eyes bugged out,” he told officials. “And then she just said, ‘We won.’”
Fagervik couldn’t believe it, he said.
“When she told me, I just dropped to the floor.”
The couple claimed their prize on Thursday, Jan. 5, and after tax withholdings they took home a lump sum of $277,877. Fagervik plans to save some money, donate some to charity and take a few trips, he said.
“I’m retired so that’s a nice nest egg to have,” he told officials.
Winston-Salem is about 80 miles northeast of Charlotte.
