Debora Rankin’s son came home from a convenience store with a gift for her recently: a North Carolina lottery ticket.

“He went to the store and got some tickets and brought that one back for me,” Rankin, who lives in Hamlet, told lottery officials, according to a June 28 North Carolina Education Lottery news release.

When Rankin checked her ticket, she didn’t believe what she saw, according to officials. She had won a $500,000 prize.

“You dream of winning something like this,” she told officials.

After taxes, Rankin took home $356,253, which she plans to use to buy a new SUV, according to officials.

“It really didn’t become a reality for me until now,” Rankin said while collecting her prize.

The winning $10 Double Diamond Cashword ticket came from the Fast Mart in Hamlet — which is about 80 miles southeast of Charlotte.
