Checking a scratch-off ticket made one North Carolina man’s dinner at home much more interesting.

While eating dinner Tuesday night, Oct. 10, Bradley Branch decided to take a look at his scratch-off ticket that he bought earlier. What the Raleigh resident saw was something that made it hard to “take another bite” of his meal, North Carolina Education Lottery officials said in an Oct. 11 news release.

Branch found out he had won $200,000 from his $5 scratch-off, which initially gave him a “nervous, jittery feeling,” lottery officials said.

“I kind of got the shakes,” Branch said in the release. “I could barely get the fork to my mouth.”

After realizing he had a big win on his hands, he snapped a picture and shared it with his best friend, he said in the release. He couldn’t believe he was a winner at first.

He picked up his winnings Wednesday, Oct. 11, which totaled $142,501 after taxes, lottery officials said. He plans to use his new cash influx to buy a car, lottery officials said, as well as put some more money in his savings account.

Branch purchased his More Money ticket from Cool Mart on Penny Road in Raleigh, lottery officials said. He chose the ticket because he “just liked the odds,” Branch said in the release.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
