Powerball player kicks off new year with $1 million win in NC. Where was ticket sold?
A Powerball player kicked off the new year with a huge Powerball win in North Carolina.
The player bought a ticket that matched all but one number picked in the Jan. 1 drawing, making it worth $1 million, results show.
The winning numbers: white balls 6-12-28-35-66, with red Powerball 26.
So, where did the winner buy the lucky ticket? It was sold at the Friendly Mart convenience store in Albemarle, a roughly 40-mile drive east from Charlotte, an N.C. Education Lottery spokesperson told McClatchy News via email.
The ticket matched all of the white balls to win $1 million. While the lucky ticket holder already has a lot to celebrate in 2025, the person was one number from scoring the jackpot prize.
No one hit the jackpot, which stood at an estimated $181 million. That means the North Carolina winner and another lottery player in Arizona won the nation’s biggest prizes the night of the drawing, according to the Powerball website.
As of early Jan. 2, no one had claimed the North Carolina prize. Powerball winners in the state have about six months to cash in, according to game rules.
What to know about Powerball
To score the jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.
The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338.
Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state.
Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.
Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
