Former S.C. Sen. John W. Drummond was laid to rest Wednesday in his native Greenwood County.

The Democratic senator and businessman from Ninety Six served more than four decades in the Senate before retiring in 2008 as its leader. He died Saturday at age 96.

Drummond was known as a deal broker who pushed for more accountability and money in public education and who played a key role in the compromise that took the Confederate battle flag off the S.C. capitol dome. He also was a decorated World War II fighter pilot captured by the Nazis.
