Greenville Police are investigating after a 5-year-old student assaulted and injured a teacher at Augusta Circle Elementary School in Greenville on Wednesday, according to Greenville County Schools.

"Because of the severity of the injuries and as required by statute, law enforcement was notified and is investigating," Beth Brotherton, school district spokeswoman, said. "The student has been suspended."

The Greenville Police department responded to the school but the boy had gone home by the time officers arrived, said Gilberto Franco, Greenville Police spokesman.

"The teacher reported she was struck several times by the student," Franco said.

The police department's juvenile detectives will investigate the incident, he said.
