Woman who tried to help Jasper County murder victim: 'I tried to keep him calm'

An anonymous witness to the Sunday night homicide in Jasper County told television station WTOC she had tried to keep the victim alive after he was shot.

The eyewitness told WTOC she believed 32-year-old Gussie Goldwire was shot with an AK-47 rifle after finding a large bullet shell next to the fatally wounded man. Goldwire had been shot in the left side of the stomach, the woman told the television station.

"I just tried to keep him calm, and he just asked 'Is help coming... . Is help coming?' And I was like 'Yes,' help is coming. They're on the way," she said.

The woman tried to keep Goldwire alert and calm while she stayed on the phone with an emergency dispatcher. The dispatcher told the woman to ask for information, but Goldwire told her she did not know who had shot him.

The Jasper County Sheriff's Office is investigating Goldwire's death. No update about the case was available Tuesday.
