A York County father who faces attempted murder charges is accused of shooting his son in the leg with an AK-47 assault rifle, police said.

Robert Hermen Corbitt, 60, of Edgemoor in southeastern York County, was charged Monday with two counts of attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and discharging a gun into a dwelling, York County jail records show.

Corbitt had been taken for medical treatment at Piedmont Medical Center after the incident while in custody, said an incident report from the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Corbitt confessed to shooting his 42-year-old son Wednesday afternoon, but told officers it was self-defense and asked for a lawyer, the incident report shows.

The son told police that he had gone to see his father to pay his utilities bill when the two started arguing, a report states. The father fired as many as 30 rounds with the rifle, the report says.

Corbitt is being held without bond.
