What is known about the mom found dead at Greenville-Pickens Speedway

The Greenville News

Jessica Leigh Edens, the mother of two children found shot to death in a Jeep at the Greenville-Pickens Speedway, was a stay-at-home-mom who ran her own photography business part time.

She and her husband, Benjamin Edens, had separated in April and he had filed for a divorce.

Jessica Edens said in court records she had a newborn son, Hayden, when she met Edens in 2008. They moved in together and were married on April 10, 2010. They had a daughter, Harper, together in July 2012.

On her now-defunct photography website, Edens had said she was “a mother of two precious children, and a wife to the most wonderful man.”

Edens said she was a passionate photographer from the time she was little.

“It didn’t hit me until I became a mom for the second time that I wanted to turn my passion for photography into a career. I decided I wanted nothing more then to become a 'stay at home working mom.'"

Edens also listed a few things she loves: Starbucks coffee and crocheting. She called herself an Upstate family photographer.

After their separation, Jessica Edens filed for sole custody of their daughter, while Benjamin Edens asked for joint custody, court records show. The requests were filed on Tuesday, July 11, just two days before the incident.

"She was a great mother, just couldn't handle losing her family and became broken," Christal Lowe, a friend, said of Edens.

Edens was found with a single gunshot wound to the head in the drivers seat of the Jeep, according to police and Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley. A 40-caliber handgun was also found in the vehicle, authorities said.

Edens was identified as the suspect in the fatal shooting of Meredith Rahme, 28, a resident at the Main + Stone apartment complex in downtown Greenville.
