One dead after officer-involved shooting in Boiling Springs (+ video)
The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office and State Law Enforcement Division are investigating an officer-involved shooting during which a suspect was killed at a home in Boiling Springs on Thursday morning.
Lt. Kevin Bobo, a Sheriff's Office spokesman, said deputies were in the process of serving a search warrant at a home at 477 Belcher Road when the suspect pointed a gun at the officers.
The deputies shot the man, who was killed, Bobo said.
“We had some officers there who defended themselves,” Sheriff Chuck Wright said. “Our officers are OK.”
Wright didn't immediately know how many officers were at the home, but said “several” were involved in the shooting.
Two officers fired shots. Both of them and the suspect are white, Bobo said.
The suspect was the only person inside the home at the time, Wright said.
The State Law Enforcement Division will be investigating, per Sheriff's Office policy.
“We want to be transparent,” Wright said. “Our officers can't investigate it because they're involved.”
The shooting in Spartanburg County comes a day after Wright condemned the actions of North Charleston Police Officer Michael Thomas Slager, who is accused of shooting and killing Walter Scott as Scott ran away following a traffic stop Saturday. That story, of a white officer killing an unarmed black man, has captured national attention.
“This was absolutely nowhere near what happened in North Charleston,” Wright said Thursday.
Staff writers Daniel J. Gross, Felicia Kitzmiller and Zach Fox contributed to this report.
