Police say a pastor strangled a woman, who is 8 weeks pregnant with his child, outside of a Charleston, South Carolina church, WCSC reports.
The woman fell to the ground and hit her head after the pastor choked her, a police report says, according to the station.
Police arrested the pastor, Rashan Lamar Wilson, 35, on Thursday, online court records show. He is charged with “domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature” and received a $20,000 bond.
An arrest affidavit says the assault happened at the Southside Impact Church in Charleston when the woman went to the church to drop of the two children she and the pastor have together, according to the Post and Courier.
They argued outside the church, according to the newspaper. “The defendant then lunged toward the victim, put both of his hands around her neck and squeezed tightly until she was unconscious for an indeterminate period of time,” the Post and Courier quoted from the affidavit.
The woman fell and hit her head on the ground, WCSC reports from the affidavit.
A witness noted in the affidavit told officers the woman walked around the corner, according to the station. Five minutes later, the victim came back around the building looking “disoriented, leaning, limping, forehead bleeding, sand and leaves in her hair,” according to WCSC.
Wilson’s attorney David Aylor denied the charges to the Post and Courier.
“What so far has been reported would be a horrendous example of domestic violence; however, when the true facts come out, we believe that (Pastor) Wilson will be exonerated of any criminal act,” he told the newspaper.
As a condition of Wilson’s bond, he is not allowed to have contact with the woman or leave South Carolina, and he has to meet in a neutral location for visitation with the children, according to court records.
Arrest records show Wilson was arrested at least once for failure to pay child support.
According to his website, Wilson is a pastor, speaker and author. He has published three books, including “99 & 1/2 Things A Woman Needs From Her Man: How To Establish and Maintain A Healthy Relationship” in 2013.
