A 5-year-old boy was walking down a street in Orangeburg, South Carolina, when he let go of an adult’s hand and went down the street to his sister, TV station WACH reports.

Then, a car coming down the street hit Ky’Shawn Gallishaw and drove off, according to the station.

Police say they arrested Charles Coulter, 28, on a manslaughter charge in the child’s death, WLTX reports.

“The facts of this case as we’ve uncovered them just shows a very cold and callous process,” Orangebug Public Safety Chief Mike Adams said, according to TV station WOLO.

Coulter appeared in court Sunday and a judge denied bond on the involuntary manslaughter charge because of his criminal history, The Times & Democrat reports.

An investigator told the court Coulter had a number of convictions on his record, including shoplifting, assault, domestic violence and driving with an open container of alcohol, according to the newspaper.

For his part, Coulter told the court, “I’m sorry that it happened. I did was about to stop to check on the little boy, but, you know, I had a family member in the car. He had warrants and he tell me to go. I was shocked about it. But I just want to say to the family of the little boy, I’m sorry. I’m sorry that it happened,” according to The Times & Democrat.

Ky’Shawn’s aunt Charlene Rankin, said, “He lied on that ground, blood coming from him,” WLTX reports.

“And it is hurting. That’s something I’ve got to walk out my door and look at every day seeing my nephew got killed. Killed him, right in front of me,” Rankin said, according to the station.
