They know ‘evidence you have been hiding’ — and want Bitcoin. It’s a scam, SC cops say
The letter gets straight to the threat: “I know the secret you are keeping from your wife and everyone else.” The anonymous blackmailer wants $20,000 worth of Bitcoin or he or she will send all the “sordid details” to your wife, friends and family.
The Mount Pleasant Police Department published a picture of the letter on social media with a specific warning: “This is a scam! Please do not send this person any money!”
The department says several people have received the same letter in the city just north of Charleston, South Carolina.
“The scammer is trying to blackmail citizens into sending them payment via Bitcoin or they will release ‘evidence you have been hiding.’ It goes on for 2 pages explaining how to use Bitcoin,” the department said on Facebook.
You have two options, the scammer threatens: pay up or face the consequences of your spilled “secret.”
“Option 2 is to pay me $20,800. We’ll call this my ‘confidentiality fee’,” the letter reads.
The letter continues: “Your secret remains your secret. You go on with your life as if none of this ever happened. Though you may want to do a better job at keeping your misdeeds secret in the future.”
