Tractor-trailer driver killed when truck runs off SC highway, troopers say

A truck driver was killed when the tractor-trailer ran off a South Carolina highway and hit a tree Tuesday, according to troopers.

It happened around 7 p.m. on S.C. 23 near Flat Rock Road in Edgefield County, several miles east of the Georgia state line, according to Lance Cpl. Gary Miller of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

A Freightliner truck towing a trailer was traveling north on S.C. 23 when the truck went off the right side of the roadway, Miller said. The driver lost control, causing the truck and trailer to go off the left side, where it hit an embankment and a tree.

The driver was entrapped in the truck and died at the scene, Miller said. It was unknown if the driver was wearing a seat belt.

The identity will be released by the Edgefield County Coroner’s Office after the next of kin is notified.
