SC prison guard arrested after allegedly assaulting restrained inmate, warrant says

A South Carolina prison guard was arrested Thursday after investigators say she assaulted a restrained inmate, according to her arrest warrants.

Lashonda Yvette Murphy, an employee of Evans Correctional Institution, was charged with assault and battery and misconduct in office, according to the state Department of Corrections.

Evans Correctional is located in Bennettsville and is a medium security prison.

Murphy is accused of grabbing an inmate by the throat and pushing him against a wall on April 2, according to her arrest warrants. The inmate had restraints on during the time of the alleged attack.

The incident was caught on camera, according to the warrant.

The case was investigated by the Department of Correction’s Police Services unit.
