High ranking cop drank and drove police car in South Carolina, chief says

A high ranking police officer in Charleston, South Carolina was demoted for drinking before driving a police car home, WCBD reports.

Charleston Police Captain Brian Ambrose was demoted to sergeant after another city employee reported what happened, according to WCSC.

Police Chief Luther Reynolds said the officer was off-duty when he drank at a King Street restaurant and drove the police car home, WCSC reports.

The incident happened Feb. 7, according to WCIV.

Ambrose, WCIV reports, “was given a pay cut along with the demotion, and will not be allowed to take home a city-owned vehicle for 1 year.”

Ambrose is a “native of the Charleston area,” according to the city, who “specialized in Homeland Security issues after 9/11, and attended numerous training classes on Weapons of Mass Destruction and anti-terrorism operations and investigations.”

He has been a Charleston police officer since 1997, according to the city.

“He serves as an instructor for the Department and has taught classes on Defensive Tactics, WMD response, Ethics, Active Shooter response, and Integrating Communications, Assessments, and Tactics (ICAT),” according to his biography on the City of Charleston website.
