Prison guard, two inmates assaulted in SC facilities in two day period

A prison guard was assaulted at South Carolina’s prison for model inmates and two more were injured at another facility this week, a Department of Corrections spokeswoman confirmed Tuesday.

The correctional officer was assaulted by an inmate Monday at Allendale Correctional Institution, spokeswoman Chrysti Shain said.

Allendale Correctional is a medium-security facility located in Fairfax. It’s the S.C. Department of Corrections’ only “character prison,” a facility that only houses inmates with a record of good behavior during their time behind bars.

The officer was treated after the assault and was later released, Shain said.

The case is still under investigation by the Department of Corrections’ Police Services division. Charges are forthcoming, Shain added.

In addition to the incident Monday, two inmates were injured during an inmate-on-inmate assault Tuesday at Broad River Correctional Institution, Shain confirmed. Both inmates were injured, but the wounds were considered non-life threatening.

Broad River Correctional is a maximum-security prison located in Columbia.

Several medium- and maximum-security prisons across the state were placed under a lockdown as a “precautionary security measure,” which means inmates will be confined to their cells for an undetermined period of time. Shain said this is the first time in a month the prisons were required to enter a lockdown.

The incident at Broad River Correctional is also under investigation by Police Services, though Shain did not provide a time line on when charges may be doled out.
