Woman is attacked on a popular walking trail in South Carolina, police say

A woman was running alone on a popular South Carolina trail when an armed attacker came up to her from behind, South Carolina officials say.

The man forced her to the ground and tugged on her clothes during the attempted sexual assault, the Greenville Police Department posted Thursday on Facebook.

He hit the woman with a gun and robbed her, according to authorities.

It happened Nov. 25 on Swamp Rabbit Trail, “one of the most highly traveled recreational destinations in Greenville,” according to the city’s police department.

Officers say the attacker ran away, and a K-9 team wasn’t able to find him.

The woman suffered injuries and got medical treatment, according to Greenville officials.

Police say they later viewed surveillance video and searched and patrolled the area.

Ronald McKinney, 29, was arrested Tuesday in connection to the walking trail attack, police say.

He was charged with armed robbery, first-degree assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to authorities.

As of Friday morning, McKinney was listed in the Greenville County jail inmate log, and his bond hadn’t been set, records show.

The alleged attack came after similar reports in the region.

In September, a jogger was assaulted in Cheraw and “fought with everything she had to get free,” the city’s police said.

Attacks were also reported on trails near the North Carolina cities of Charlotte and Marvin.
