Mystery hero steps in to stop car thief who tried to drive off with baby, SC cops say

A mystery hero stepped in to help a dad after someone tried to steal a car with a baby in the back seat, according to South Carolina police.

The father was changing his infant in the back seat of a car when someone jumped in the front seat and tried to steal the car, according to a Charleston Police Department report.

When the dad asked the man, identified as Raheem Grant, 30, what he was doing, the suspect said the car was actually his, police said.

This was all happening in front of the man’s 11-year-old daughter, infant son and the children’s mother at about 11 p.m. Saturday, the report said.

The dad jumped out to stop the would-be robber, but the suspect started punching the father in the face as the 2-week-old baby lay in the back, the report said.

Raheem Grant was charged with carjacking and assault.

A good Samaritan nearby in the parking lot of the Charleston County Park stepped in as the father fought back and helped pull Grant from the car, the report said.

The good Samaritan left the scene before police got there, but not until the suspect was subdued on the ground, police said.

The suspect was taken to the hospital with a broken nose and a concussion before officers took him to jail, according to the police report.

Jail records show Grant was charged with carjacking with great bodily injury and third-degree assault and battery. He’s being held on a $76,000 bond.
