‘Mayday’ call prompts Coast Guard search in South Carolina harbor, official says
An early morning “mayday” call prompted the U.S. Coast Guard to launch a search off the South Carolina coast, an official says.
Helicopter and boat crews early Monday were searching the Charleston Harbor area, near where they believed the radio message originated about 4 a.m., said spokesperson Petty Officer 2nd Class Ryan Dickinson.
Officials heard a male voice on the call but didn’t know the exact location, type of vessel or the number of people on board, he said.
Local agencies are helping with the search, according to WCBD.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
