Students from Christian college suspended after sexual misconduct allegations in SC

Students were suspended from a Christian college after sexual misconduct allegations surfaced, South Carolina officials say.

The students attended Bob Jones University, a Christian liberal arts school in Greenville, spokesman Randy Page told WYFF and other news outlets.

Page said the students aren’t suspects and “were not suspended because of sexual misconduct,” according to an email sent late Monday to McClatchy News.

“As the case is currently still under investigation by the State Law Enforcement Division, we are not sharing any details to avoid jeopardizing their investigation,” Page wrote in an earlier email.

The suspensions are linked to a case at nearby Furman University, The Greenville News reports.

The S.C. Law Enforcement Division declined to release details about the ongoing investigation on Monday, spokesperson Tommy Crosby told McClatchy News in an email.

“SLED is actively participating in an investigation with Furman University Police regarding accusations of sexual misconduct involving student athletes at the University,” he wrote.

Furman, another private school in Greenville, told its campus Friday that the reported sexual misconduct involved “multiple Furman students.”

The university’s Title IX office was also looking into the allegations, according to the email from Police Chief John Milby.

Furman has roughly 2,600 students, while Bob Jones has an enrollment of about 3,000, according to the schools.

Bob Jones University, founded in 1927 by evangelist Bob Jones Sr., “exists to grow Christlike character that is scripturally disciplined, others-serving, God-loving, Christ-proclaiming and focused above,” its website says.
