A bland snack catapulted to the top of the list of best-selling Walmart items in South Carolina.

Palmetto State online shoppers bought Nabisco Minis Premium Original Saltine Crackers more than any other item in 2019, the company said Tuesday in a news release.

So how did this unexpected snack make it into so many pantries?

For years, saltine crackers have been adding crunch to bowls of soup and serving as a go-to food for people with tummy troubles.

And the lowly food has even jazzed up everything from pie crust to turkey stuffing, according to recipes from the Food Network.

Need to make a crab cake? Saltine crackers can do that job, too.

And of course, there’s no rule against eating them plain.

So maybe it’s the versatility that makes these snacks Walmart’s No. 1 item in South Carolina.

Whatever the cause, saltine crackers join a list of surprising top purchases from across the United States.

Overall, the best seller in the country this year was an Instant Pot cooker, Walmart says.

In 2018, South Carolina’s most-bought item was a bit more predictable.

It was an Ozark Trail 20-Ounce Tumbler, a drinking vessel that also proved to be popular in Kansas, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio, according to Walmart.
