SC company stiffed employees out of $82K, feds say. They’re getting it back
A South Carolina auto parts company did not pay dozens of employees for weeks, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Now the company is paying more than $82,000 in back wages.
Quality Vision LLC, in North Charleston, paid the money to 24 employees after the company did not give them paychecks for weeks, federal officials said.
“Employers are required by the Fair Labor Standards Act to pay their employees all the wages they have legally earned,” Jamie Benefiel, with the Department of Labor, said in a news release.
“Missed payrolls place undue hardships on employees, greatly affecting their ability to provide for themselves and their families. We encourage employers and employees to contact the Wage and Hour Division directly if they have questions about compliance with federal pay requirements,” Benefiel said.
Two other companies in South Carolina have been cited by the Labor Department this month. The department forced Mojitos LLC, which operates the Mad Cuban Café in Simpsonville, to pay employees more than $12,000 in unpaid overtime and for keeping their tips, according to the department.
The department also fined the restaurant $336 for violating child labor laws. The restaurant allegedly made a minor work more than allowed by law during the school year.
Federal investigators also cited a vegetable packing company in Pelion, south of Columbia, for not paying overtime. Walter P. Rawl and Sons Inc., operating as WP Rawl, owed more than $100,000 for not paying overtime to 408 workers, the department said.
