Dad, 9-year-old daughter were mistaken for deer in hunting accident, SC officials say

A father and his 9-year-old daughter were shot and killed in a hunting accident in South Carolina on New Year’s Day, according to multiple reports.

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources said it is investigating the deaths in Colleton County.

The accident happened on Barracada Road near Walterboro, a rural area of forest and farmland about 45 miles west of Charleston, state officials said.

Officials said four hunters were trying to drive a deer when two were mistaken for deer and shot. They both died from their injuries.

“Driving a deer” means they were trying to move a deer through the woods.

The Colleton County Coroner’s Office said the two victims were Kim Drawdy, 30, and his daughter, Lauren Drawdy, WCSC reports.

Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy told WCIV his office got a call at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. First responders found the father and daughter “about a half mile into the woods,” he told the station.

New Year’s Day was the last day of deer season in South Carolina.
