These Southeastern states are among the worst to raise a family, study finds
Several states in the Southeast are among the least family friendly in the country, a new study says.
Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Mississippi all rank in the bottom 10 places to raise children, according to findings from the personal finance website WalletHub. They hold spots at No. 42, No. 43, No. 46 and No. 49, respectively.
Nearby, Arkansas and Louisiana were also among the lowest-ranking states, study results released Tuesday show. West Virginia got one of the lowest scores, too.
How did so many states in the region end up near-last in WalletHub’s study?
WalletHub says it evaluated costs, health, safety, education and family activities. The study also weighed unemployment and poverty rates, according to the company.
Some Southeastern states received low scores in more than one category, findings show.
The results come as people have migrated south to escape the cold and high costs in some Northern states, MarketWatch reported last year.
Overall, Minnesota was named the best place to raise a family. The lowest-ranking state was New Mexico, according to the results.
