Georgia teen found dead with gunshot wounds in South Carolina retention pond, cops say

Officials in South Carolina are investigating after they say a body was found in a retention pond Monday.

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office got a call at about 10:30 a.m. about a “possible body” in the Appleton Mill retention pond in Anderson, WSPA reported.

Deputies came to the pond and say they found a person floating dead in the water with gunshot wounds, according to FOX Carolina.

Officials later identified the body as 18-year-old Mericus J. Scott of Royston, Georgia, the Anderson Independent Mail reported.

He seemed to have been dead for a short period of time, officials told WSPA.

Detectives, forensic investigators and technical rescue personnel also responded to the pond, FOX Carolina reports.

Officials are investigating the death as a homicide, WSPA reports, and an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

No other information has been released yet as of 5:45 p.m. Monday afternoon.
