Airbnb partiers trash home and leave it covered in blood and vomit, SC lawsuit says

After police broke up a party at an Airbnb rental house on South Carolina’s Isle of Palms, a cleaner found the house trashed, with blood and vomit on the walls, drugs left in the house and a stench that lingered for a week, according to a lawsuit.

Scott Shaw sued Airbnb, claiming the company only paid $650 despite the cleanup and repairs that cost thousands of dollars. He called Airbnb’s warranty guarantee “a scam.”

When the cleaner went in the home, it smelled of cigarettes, marijuana, beer and vomit, according to the lawsuit. There was blood and vomit on the walls, bedding and towels, a broken door and countertop, holes in the walls and other damage, according to the court filing. An Xbox was also missing, the lawsuit said.

“Shaw also learned from the Isle of Palms Police Department that many of the party guests were under-age, some of them had drugs, and at least one had a gun,” according to the suit. Shaw claims police said the renter and his friends are gang members “and they promoted the party and charged people to enter the home.”

Police shut down the party and told the owner there were more than 100 people at the July 2019 party, the suit said.

In a statement to the Associated Press, Airbnb said the company plans to “vigorously defend against these allegations.”

“Every day we support hosts around the world with our $1 Million Host Guarantee,” the company told the AP.

The lawsuit was filed in Charleston County court last month and recently moved to federal court, records show.
