Driver hits crossing guard at South Carolina school and keeps driving, video shows
A driver was caught on video hitting a crossing guard at a South Carolina school, police say.
The driver, who has not been identified, hit the crossing officer outside of Charleston Charter School for Math and Science at about 7:40 a.m. Friday and continued driving after, the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook Wednesday.
A video posted to Facebook by the sheriff’s office shows the crossing guard finish letting a couple of students cross toward the school.
Then, the driver of a sedan accelerates toward the crossing guard, striking her legs, the video shows.
The guard was still standing in the crosswalk and holding up her stop sign, the sheriff’s office says.
Instead of stopping, the driver keeps moving forward, the video shows. The guard can be seen holding up her stop sign and trying to get the driver to stop.
But despite her “pleas to stop,” the driver continues pushing the guard with her car, the sheriff’s office says.
At one point the guard almost falls, the video shows. The car then speeds off, “brushing” against the guard as it went by her, the sheriff’s office says.
The guard had “minor injuries,” according to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office is asking for the public’s help identifying the driver.
The sedan, which is “likely a Honda Civic or similar”, likely has paper tags and the driver is described as a black woman in her 30s wearing a black blazer and pink or purple shirt at the time of the incident, the sheriff’s office says.
Anyone with information is asked to call 843-202-1700 for the sheriff’s office or 843-554-1111 from Crime Stoppers, the sheriff’s office wrote on Facebook.
Another driver hit a school crossing guard in the county on Jan. 16, the sheriff’s office said. The officer had to be taken to the hospital.
“We urge drivers to use extra caution in school zones, follow crossing officers’ directions and yield the right of way until students and crossing officers have exited the crosswalk,” the sheriff’s office wrote on Facebook.
