SC lottery player hid winning ticket for ‘safe keeping’ — then forgot where he put it

A South Carolina man won the lottery — but his luck quickly turned around.

That’s because he just couldn’t find his ticket that was worth $150,000, the S.C. Education Lottery said Monday in a news release.

The man went into a panic and started a tireless search, the news release said.

Eventually, he found the ticket in an envelope, where he had put it “for safe keeping,” he told lottery officials.

The lottery says the man’s good fortune started when he stopped at a QuikTrip convenience store in Greenville. He went to the Pleasantburg Drive location and paid $1 extra for PowerPlay, an option that multiplies winnings in the Powerball game.

Days later, he checked results from the Jan. 22 drawing and found out he matched enough numbers to win a prize, according to the lottery.

“This is incredible,” said the man, who lives in Greer but wasn’t named in the news release.

He wasn’t the first person to nearly lose a winning ticket.

In North Carolina, the wind almost carried away a ticket worth $489,211, The News & Observer reported in April.

Another lottery player could be getting an even bigger windfall soon.

A Powerball drawing scheduled for Wednesday could have a jackpot prize of $70 million, officials say.
