2 college athletes dead, others hurt in head-on crash in South Carolina, officials say

Two college athletes were killed and three other people were rushed to the hospital after a head-on crash in South Carolina, officials say.

Grace Revels, 20, of Lancaster and Mia Stokes, 18, of Charlotte died after the collision on a state highway, the Spartanburg County coroner said Saturday in a news release.

The women played softball at nearby University of South Carolina Union, a branch of the main USC campus, WYFF and other news outlets report.

Two other teammates were seriously injured in the crash, the school’s Lady Bantams Softball page posted on Facebook. Among those hurt was Stokes’ twin sister, Mallory, according to Coroner Rusty Clevenger.

“Our first priority at this moment is to extend our compassion and condolences to their family and friends,” the team’s post said. “We ask everyone to keep our campus and their families in your thoughts and prayers in the days to come.”

The crash happened Friday night, when the four women were in a Ford Mustang that was traveling south on SC-295, according to a news release from SC Highway Patrol.

A 23-year-old driving a Toyota in the other direction veered over the center line and hit the Mustang head-on, state and university officials say. That person was taken to a hospital, according to troopers.

News releases from law enforcement didn’t mention charges related to the crash. “Toxicology and Forensic exams” were pending as of Saturday, according to the coroner’s office.

USC Union on Monday planned to have counselors available in its student lounge, according to a Facebook post.

“Our campus can’t begin to thank everyone enough for the outpouring of love you have shown,” the school wrote over the weekend.
