Snake slithers into power station and causes a blackout, SC company says

A wayward snake slithered into a power substation and started a small fire, causing blackouts in Upstate South Carolina on Tuesday, according to the Broad River Electric Cooperative.

The company shared photos of what happened when the snake got into the high-voltage electrical equipment, showing an electrocuted snake dangling from the structure.

“A snake slithered into our Cowpens substation and caused a flash resulting in a fire in our zone B controls and destroying them,” the company said.

Asked on Facebook how big the snake was, the coop responded: “I have no idea and it’s sorta tough to say. But there’s not much left of the Mr. Snake that used to be.”

“Interesting fact though, most likely the snake was in the substation patrolling for bird nests, and hence, bird eggs. He may have been a little cold as well last night,” the company said.

About 680 people lost power thanks to the snake, according to WSPA.
