Military explosive dug up in South Carolina city, forcing busy intersection to evacuate

A construction crew working near a busy intersection in Charleston, South Carolina, unearthed what appears to be an old military explosive on Tuesday, according to police.

Officers shut down the area around a busy Meeting Street intersection near Interstate 26, Charleston police said on Twitter.

Police said an explosive ordnance disposal team from the U.S. Air Force was on the scene Tuesday afternoon to dispose of the possible explosive.

Old unexploded ordnance shows up from time to time in the Charleston area from fighting during the Civil War or training during the 20th century’s world wars.

Last year, Hurricane Dorian uncovered Civil War cannonballs on Folly Beach, WCSC reports.

Workers find explosive devices several times a year in former bombing ranges in the Myrtle Beach area.
