Woman getting her mail fatally hit by driver fleeing police, SC officials say

A South Carolina woman was killed during a police chase while getting her mail Tuesday, officials say.

An officer with the Anderson Police Department tried to pull over a driver around 7 p.m., but the driver reportedly fled and a chase started that lasted about 11 minutes, officials tell the Anderson Independent Mail.

Shortly after 7 p.m., the driver lost control on Dobbins Bridge Road and fatally hit 54-year-old Brenda Mary Wilson while she was walking to her mailbox, the Anderson County Coroner told WSPA.

The driver then hit a tree and another empty vehicle nearby and was trapped in the car, according to Trooper Joe Hovis with the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Wilson and the driver died at the scene, Hovis says.

The driver was identified as 30-year-old Grayson Dean Mathis Jr., of Anderson, the Independent Mail reports.

The county coroner’s office and highway patrol are still investigating, according to WSPA.
