Injuries reported in collision that blocks interstate in Columbia

A collision blocked a major highway running through Richland County and caused injuries Sunday.

The crash happened at about 12:30 p.m. on Interstate 77, and a southbound lane was blocked near Exit 12, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter. That’s the Forest Drive exit in Columbia, leading traffic toward Fort Jackson.

Injuries were reported in the wreck, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

Information on the extent of the injuries and the number of people hurt was not available.

There was no word on what caused the crash, or the amount of vehicles involved.

Traffic cameras showed drivers backed up on I-77 as they avoided the wreck and the emergency responders on the scene.

Shortly after 1 p.m., all lanes on I-77 were open for traffic, which continued to move slowly through the area, with vehicles pulled to the right shoulder of the highway.
