Walmart to build $220 million distribution center in SC, bringing 1,000 new jobs
Walmart is planning to build a new $220 million distribution center in South Carolina, which the company says will create 1,000 full-time jobs, according to a Monday release.
The roughly three million square-foot building, coming to Dorchester County near Ridgeville, will take an estimated 14 months to complete, the release said.
“Walmart has proven to be an exemplary partner that is committed to South Carolina and our citizens,” Gov. Henry McMaster said in response to the announcement, adding “we couldn’t be prouder” that Walmart is continuing to invest in its South Carolina operations.
The new center is intended to strengthen the company’s regional supply chain network, and will support 850 Walmart and Sam’s Club stores in and around the state, the release said.
“At a time when job creation is so vital, and- more than ever- our customers are relying on Walmart for the essentials they need during this unprecedented time, we are excited about the impact this new facility will have on the regional economy and how it will help us better serve customers across the Southeast,” Greg Smith, Walmart executive vice president of supply chain, said in the release.
There are typically a variety of jobs available at distribution centers, from managerial roles, to freight handlers, to technicians and more, according to Walmart.
The average pay for distribution center workers is $15.42, Indeed.com found, based on an analysis of 5,745 employees.
