Another South Carolina city ranks among the best places to retire on new national list

A South Carolina city was named among the best places to retire on a new national list.

Charleston ranks No. 3 in a study of affordability, safety and other factors that contribute to the retirement experience, according to results released Tuesday from WalletHub.

To come up with its findings, the personal finance website says it used data from the federal government, organizations and companies to analyze “182 cities — including the 150 most populated U.S. cities, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state.”

Each city was evaluated in four categories: costs, recreation, health care and quality of life, results show.

Charleston, a popular tourist spot, received a high score for its activities, WalletHub says. The city ranked No. 18 overall in that category, which examined recreation sites, entertainment venues and volunteer opportunities.

The city was also named among the most affordable, ranking No. 29 in the country. The score was based on taxes and living expenses for older adults, results show.

Charleston also came in at No. 56 for factors that impact residents’ health and No. 59 for safety, climate and other quality-of-life indicators, according to WalletHub.

The results come after Charleston missed top spots in other recent retirement rankings.

In August, no South Carolina cities made it onto Forbes’ list of best places in the nation for retirement. The business magazine weighed costs, quality of life and features that help older adults stay active, McClatchy News reported.

More recently, Greenville was the only city in the Palmetto State to make it into SmartAsset’s list of the top 10 “places for retirees to live and work.” The city’s taxes and housing costs helped it earn a place in the nationwide rankings, McClatchy News reported.

In the WalletHub report, Orlando was named the No. 1 city for retirement. The worst place was Newark, New Jersey, according to the findings.
